BMW Handheld Tuner with Custom Mapping

No need to send in your ECU or remove it from your bike at all. You order the handheld, it gets delivered to you, you flash your bike. You never miss a day of riding and no effort removing the ECU.

Built on the foundation of the already popular //M+ mapping, Stage 1 ECU Flash goes a few steps further:

  • More Derestriction
  • Fuelling
  • Ignition
  • Multiple
  • Quick Shifter
  • EGT Correction
  • Mode Limiters
  • Safety

HOW DO WE ACCOMPLISH THIS WITH STAGE 1?

MORE RESTRICTIONS REMOVED. The OEM throttle model has “soft” and “hard” limits. The soft limits are where the 2020 S1000RR will start to close the throttle and limit torque by itself at high speed or high RPM. We removed the top speed governor and made sure the throttle or torque isn’t limited.

MODIFIED FUELLING FOR FULL TIME CLOSED LOOP AND WILL TARGET FOR PERFORMANCE (not just rideability in the //M+ flash). The //M+ flash focuses on smooth and consistent rideability only. It does not take peak performance into consideration. That may sound silly given how much of an improvement the //M+ flash gives the 2020 S1000RR but on Stage 1 we decided to focus purely on performance while still taking rideability into account. MANY hours, days, months have gone into developing the Stage 1 flash to make sure the bike is not only fast, but also reliable, smooth and consistent. For safety we adjust the OEM wideband sensors to read +/- 35% at all times.

MODIFIED IGNITION FOR PERFORMANCE ON VARIOUS OCTANES. The //M+ flash did not touch any of the stock ignition tables. Stage 1 optimizes the ignition tables for performance and reliability. The S1000RR has multiple timing tables. Depending on fuel quality, the bike will choose more aggressive timing tables or less aggressive (if knock is present).

MR12 HORSEPOWER AND OTHER 100 OCTANE FUELING MAPS INCLUDED. One flash does it all. Because of the adaptive ECU and OEM wideband sensors, the S1000RR is able to switch between fuels without flashing to a new map. This means if you want to run regular 93 pump gas then switch to MR12, you do not have to change maps. The adaptive ECU and our Stage 1 flash will account for the new fuel and change automatically to optimize performance. The only thing the user has to do is pump the gas in the bike and ride.

MODIFIED QUICK SHIFTER TIMES FOR UP/DOWN SHIFTING “KILL” TIMES. Faster and smoother shifting for the OEM quick shifter. We made what was already good, even better.

MODIFIED EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE (EGT) CORRECTION MAPS. These maps typically limit performance but with our testing we are able to gain more power and keep the bike just as reliable with more consistency during racing scenarios.

SPORT MODE LIMITERS ADJUSTED. Sport mode has been adjusted to offer full power with changed traction control settings for smoother riding.

SERVICE BULLETIN UPDATED SAFETY MAPS ADDED. Early S1000RR’s had incorrect ignition timing from the factory. This was only at high RPM but it could result in knock (preignition of fuel in the combustion chamber). As a result BMW issued a service bulletin and software update to rectify this issue. We made sure to include this in our mapping while still maintaining a high level of performance and reliability.

Red = Baseline with 93 Pump Gas
Blue = Stage 1 with 93 Pump Gas
Green = Stage 1 with MR12 Race Fuel

Keep in mind the baseline includes full Akrapovic Exhaust, a Sprint high-flow air filter, IAT relocation, and modified airbox flappers. Without these modifications the baseline would be lower. The only thing we changed from run to run was flashing the S1000RR and adding MR12 race fuel for the final run. We are seeing more than a 5% gain in power just from the flash on a 2020 S1000RR that is already full bolt-on.

BT Moto IAT Relocation and Flaper Kit

Optional add-ons.

PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO A HIGH DEMAND OF CUSTOMERS WANTING TO SKIP THE FLAPPER AND IAT RELOCATION, OUR FLAPPER AND IAT KITS ARE NOW OPTIONAL ADD-ONS, STAGE 2 MAPPING WILL WORK WITH OR WITHOUT THOSE MODIFICATIONS.

What is Stage 2?

Following the release of our wildly popular Stage 1 Flash we needed to sit down and really start to look at what the 2020 truly has to offer. Anyone with our Stage 1 Flash will tell you how much it improved acceleration, got rid of the now infamous “dead spot”, fixed the OEM idle issues, and made the motorcycle feel better and more smooth overall. Stage 2 has months of research and development behind it as well as datalogging and dyno testing. The new 2020 S1000RR is familiar to us but also completely changed. To that end we were able define new ECU strategies that we can help make this already impressive bike even more impressive. Stage 2 is a feature map making the bike more consistent, more reliable, and smoother and combined with our IAT Relocation and flap delete kit results in a much improved motorcycle!

Benefits Over Stage 1

Includes all benefits of Stage 1, with these added features:

  • Octane adjustments
  • Corrected cold/warm start idle
  • Re-calibrated timing
  • Lower max lambda, leaner high RPM Target
  • Higher RPM limit without throttle cut for roll racers
  • 30% faster up and downshifts
  • Optional IAT extension kit and intake flapper removal kit (see above)

How Do We Accomplish This With Stage 2?:

  • Octane adjustments for auto adaptation on pump gas for US and international fuels 91-94 octane 95-100 RON. Utilizing the multiple ignition maps and factory widebands, we are able to increase performance based on knock detection. This also means if you have some bad fuel, the motorcycle will still compensate and put the bike into safety mapping just like the OEM ECU would. This ensures your bike stays consistent and reliable.
  • Corrected cold/warm start idle to 2015 RR levels, finer tuning beyond Stage 1. Stage 1 did a lot to correct the startup issues the 2020 S1000RR was having. Stage 2 goes a step further. There is no longer a high idle that transitions into a lower idle. The idle remains static without any lean popping, idle hunting or stalling
  • Re-calibrated timing for higher octanes to make use of race fuels on same tune. The 2020 S1000RR has multiple ignition maps and based on knock feedback, the bike will start to adjust to different timing maps. This means if you have a high octane fuel in the bike or race fuel and knock isn’t present, the bike will transition to a more aggressive timing map automatically. A more aggressive timing map will safely allow the bike to make more power. No more flashing every time you want to use race gas although we can still provide specific race fuel mapping designed to be used on ONLY race gas. This feature is most beneficial when you are on the track or street and don’t have your handheld available to swap maps.
  • Lower max lambda, leaner high RPM Target for a few more horsepower. AFR (air/fuel ratio) adjustments have been made to Stage 2 to be more aggressive to get a little more power out of the bike while remaining safe.
  • Higher RPM limit without throttle cut for roll racers (optional) With Stage 2 we are able to raise the RPM limiter to 15,000 RPM while also making sure the raised RPM event is not stored in the ECU. We have also adjusted the spark and fuel cuts so when the rev limit is hit, the bike doesn’t feel like you slammed on the brakes, it’s more gentle now.
  • 30% faster up and downshifts over Stage 1 and now allows the use of fast shift sensor products on the market if desired.

2020+ BMW S1000RR Wideband Tuning Explanation

The topic of wideband / broadband sensor fuel correction is a known first in the new BMW 2019+ EU or 2020+ US bikes. What does this mean? Put simply it means the bike has a full-time, real-time correction and “autotuner” built into it from the factory that can correct or add fuel on the fly, idle to redline from 25+% to 25-%.

What isn’t new, however, is other tuners and people misunderstanding the potency of a factory wideband and deceitfully diverting the topic from factual information to blatant fear mongering. They’ll say it’s bad because they simply don’t understand it’s value or how it works. That or they have absolutely no control over it’s features with their limited entry-level tuning kit like Race/Titanium/WR. The same people that fear monger are the same people who can’t add our features like the cold start fix, cooling fan temp control, air-flap kit, IAT relocation, custom launch control, the list goes on. They’re simply trying to find ways to misinform the customer why their product is superior with far less features. So we are here to explain why removing these, or not using them correctly is a step in the wrong direction.

Why is wideband tuning excellent? Say you target a 12:8:1 air/fuel ratio on full-load, you go up 4000ft, you go down 4000ft, you tuned in Massachusetts but race in a Texas tunnel or COTA race track on the weekends. The bike is automatically correcting for 12:8:1 in all conditions and adding or subtracting on the fly to hit your fuelling (aka lambda target).

The pre 2020 S1000RR’s could not self-tune. People were live tuning bikes on race day. They were pulling their laptops out on the side of the highway with a PC5. Put in race gas with 10% more oxygen, boom 12:8:1. Mix that with tweaking BMW’s automatic ignition map RON adjustment, and you have a live tuning fuel and ignition bike ready. This is because the pre 2020 bikes use an archaic narrowband fueling model, or when deleted a completely open-loop fuel table. It’s fixed off engine RPM and throttle position to tell the bike how much fuel to inject. It’s tuned for the conditions it was live tuned in only! Changes to any of those conditions, even a few percent, exhaust, temperature, old air filter, and the bike could be lean or rich now. It’s a “static” fuel model which is trying to hit a target that is constantly moving, which can be very cumbersome and time consuming to tune for every variable, every day!

The difference in the 2020 is the wideband system is only used in certain criteria and then it is turned on or off into open loop so it does need adjustment. By temperature, rpm, throttle position, air mass etc. This can’t be done without re-writing code to suit it. This will not happen in Race2000 or WR software. We are the only proven solution that is available for 100% closed loop tuning.

What we see written lately is people are advising to remove the sensors (WOW!) and are told that they fail and put the perfectly German engineered wideband equipped bike back into 2003 with an open loop model. It’s almost like putting a carburetor back on a fuel injected bike in the early 2000’s because they don’t understand! This is just ignorance and having a lack of equipment and/or knowledge to fully optimize or understand the system. Remember when and if these sensors fail (which we haven’t seen under extremely aggressive testing) the bike has a fallback failsafe mode of open loop anyways built in, a failsafe configuration. Much like a car does when the oxygen sensor goes, or mass air-flow sensor fails. Same idea as if you were to unplug it.

So long story short, don’t bring your state-of-the-art engineered superbike back to a prehistoric fuel model dinosaur era.

What is a Handheld Tuner and what are the benefits of having one?

Thoroughly tested by our own engineers, not just for its function but also durability. We purposefully dropped this thing about 100 times just to make sure if you accidentally dropped it, it would still be a usable device.

So why buy it when you can just send in your ECU for flashing and spend less? Let’s see the breakdown:

  • NO DOWNTIME – No need to send in your ECU or remove it from your bike at all. You order the handheld, it get’s delivered to you, you flash your bike. You never miss a day of riding and no effort removing the ECU.
  • STORE MULTIPLE MAPS – When you send in your ECU, you only get one map. You might be thinking, “why would I need more than one map?”. Storing multiple maps means you’re able to flash for different fuels. If you’re a serious track competitor, we can work with you to get you different mapping for different tracks. If, for example, you add an exhaust to your stock bike, we can email you a file that takes the new exhaust into account with the changes you need to optimize your bike’s new modifications.
  • GO BACK TO STOCK ANYTIME – Not only can you store multiple race maps, you can also flash the original, stock file back into the bike at any time and for any reason.
