Ducati Handheld Tuner with Custom Mapping

No need to send in your ECU or remove it from your bike at all. You order the handheld, it gets delivered to you, you flash your bike. You never miss a day of riding and no effort removing the ECU.

After almost a year of development the V4R / SL flash is here. Through extensive testing we’ve managed to safety increase the performance of the motorcycle without compromising reliability. We aren’t just talking about peak numbers here, we found power across the entire RPM range and better overall rideability. Each change we’ve made improves the motorcycle not only in outright speed, but also smoothness and consistency at the track. The result is our Stage 1 flash. This flash can also be used for the V4 Superleggera as both bikes share the exact same engine.

Why Is This The Best Upgrade You Can Buy?

Currently, there is only one option to flash the V4R and it requires the purchase of a FULL exhaust system. The changes in the flash are mostly fuelling changes and can be VASTLY improved upon. This flash cannot be purchased independently without the purchase of the exhaust system. So what do people that have slip-on exhaust do? There’s nothing they can do at the moment. Our diagnostic tool is the only option for people looking for a flash without the purchase of an exhaust.

With or without an exhaust flash, we all know the Ducati V4R / SL is a masterpiece! We also know it isn’t perfect. Issues that we’ve tested ourselves and what customers have reported include the following::

  • There’s only one flash on the market and it requires you to spend thousands on a new exhaust system.
  • Stalling for no reason during idle
  • Startup issues when exhaust is installed
  • Acceleration that isn’t smooth through the entire RPM range or at low RPM (mainly with aftermarket exhaust)
  • Engine seems to struggle (lurch or jump through RPM range) if too warm
  • Power that seems “tame” compared to it its 1103cc brother, the V4
  • Engine light appears after modified exhaust is installed

So What Do We Do About This?

After extensive R&D with the Ducati V4R / SL, we can confidently say that we successfully addressed each issue and improved every performance aspect of the V4R:

  • No more stalling at idle for no reason
  • No startup issues with exhaust installed
  • Acceleration is now smooth through the entire RPM range with aftermarket exhaust
  • Engine performs the same with the engine warm or hot

But I Already Have A Flash That Came With My Exhaust. Why Do I Need This?

When you buy an Akrapovic full system you get a map from the dealer to upload. You are not allowed to upload this yourself and technically the dealer isn’t allowed to upload it either (if your street bike is actually ridden on public roads). This exhaust is for off-road use only and is stipulated on the inside of both mufflers. The flash is very basic. Rev limit is increased, engine light from missing exhaust valve is turned off, AFR (air fuel ratio) is changed to accommodate the new exhaust and the ignition map is altered. There’s no available updates or changes (should you decide to upgrade more engine components) and it’s made for pump fuel only.

Do You Have A Slip-On System? No Support For You!

There is absolutely NO support for ANY slip-on system or any second hand full exhaust system! If you switch systems this can cause a headache and most of the fuel devices or flashes on the market that claim to be in development have all but been abandon at this point.

When you buy any slip on system, including: Akrapovic, SC Project, AR Racing, Arrow, etc. There is NO tuning or flash solution. This means you get an exhaust valve code (check engine light on the dash, permanently), a 20hp/tq loss down low from lack of fuel (lean!). Fuelling is so bad that some riders have gone back to stock. The bike surges and feels like something is wrong (because something IS wrong).

Our diagnostic tool allows the user the ability to use a slip-on or full system. We have extensively tested MANY exhaust systems and gathered data on what fuelling changes to make. We also accommodate for multiple mod combinations and even different fuels! (91/93/100/MR12). Our Stage 1 flash will make you fall in love with your bike all over again. See below for AFR mapping infograph.

AFTERMARKET EXHAUST AFR (AIR/FUEL RATIO) VS BT Moto STAGE 1

Below you’ll see the extended AFR (air/fuel ratio) graph BT Moto Stage 1 Flash (red lines) vs the stock tune, both with aftermarket exhaust and done back to back on our in-house DynoJet. The lines under the power and torque grid is the AFR (air/fuel ratio). You can see where the stock mapping get’s extremely lean (18.8 peak). Our mapping corrects this and you can see how the power responds to the better AFR.

**Short exhausts like SC Project, for example, require the use of baffles to maintain good rideability and optimal performance**

Constant and repetitive testing is needed to get a good idea of exactly what’s needed in tuning. We need to test cold, warm, hot, different fuels, real world testing, dyno testing, etc. Always with proper logging software to ensure the motorcycle is well-within safety margins and does not exceed it’s capability. We are aiming for performance, but also reliability and smoothness. Even the idle was adjusted to ensure your motorcycle doesn’t have any issues.

Below you’ll see some of the testing we conducted on our own DynoJet. With our Stage 1 flash you can see large gains, but not only peak power. The entire RPM range benefits from our flash. This means more power everywhere and better light-to-light rideability. More torque means better mid-range. With the V4R lacking the 103cc’s the V4 has, more torque is always welcome.

Below is a detailed dyno sheet from our in-house dyno testing. We removed the final numbers because all dyno’s are different and read power differently. What’s important is the gain over a baseline dyno. We consistently see a 10% gain in power and torque with our flash (with MR12 race fuel). Expect 5% gains with pump gas. Keep in mind that with our diagnostic tool, you’ll have the ability to store multiple files and changes them trackside for different fuels or track conditions.

RED = Stock tuning with aftermarket exhaust
BLUE = BT Moto Stage 1 flash with 93 octane pump gas
GREEN = BT Moto Stage 1 flash with MR12 race fuel

Note
All in-house testing performed with 93 octane pump gas. Usage of a lower octane will yield smaller power gains.

INDEPENDENT TESTING BY DYNOJET USA THEMSELVES

We were lucky enough to have Dynojet in Las Vegas test this product vs. their current tune. From our customer, Mark: “So far so good with the current map in the bike. As you know the power is very strong. This number was achieved on a DynoJet dyno at DynoJet in Las Vegas. The map works well in all areas. Throttle tip in is smooth with no on/off light switch tendencies. The bike cleanly screams to redline.”

**ALL dyno runs, including baseline, on this V4R were done using VP U4.4 racing fuel. This customer does not run pump gas in their motorcycle. Bigger gains are possible with VP MR12 Racing fuel or U4.4. This motorcycle had full Akrapovic Exhaust and Akrapovic mapping for baseline results. Below is what our custom mapping was able to gain beyond the Akrapovic Mapping.**

Though all the Ducati models that bare the V4 name may look aesthetically different, the engine itself changes very little. Taking this into consideration we spent months sweeping through every byte of data we could to find and define new tables and advance the platform enough that we could confidently say Stage 2 is a worthy upgrade do your Ducati. We had to re-develop fuel mapping, ignition and toque strategies, all from square one. After thorough testing on and off the dyno, Stage 2 is ready.

WHAT STAGE 2 INCLUDES:

  • Lower gear throttle torque limiters removed
  • Deceleration fuelling strategy adjusted
  • Faster quickshifter
  • 1:1 throttle response
  • First gear RPM limiter changed
  • Refined per-cylinder tuning
  • Maximum throttle monitor threshold raised
  • Knock control system revised

Anyone that has the Akrapovic or Termi up-maps will say the bike feels a lot more lively than stock and our stage 1 even better than that. Beta testers and our own R&D reveal a noticeable improvement over our Stage 1 flash with our new and revised Stage 2 mapping

HOW DOES THIS HELP YOUR DUCATI?

  • Lower gear throttle torque limiters removed for full power and RPM without intervention of timing retard. Gears 1-2 in for V4 / V4R and 1-4 in Streetfighter / Multi.
  • Deceleration fuelling strategy adjusted to get rid of twitchy, notorious Ducati feel. The bike feels smoother overall and has the driveability of an inline 4 cylinder.
  • Faster quickshifter from reduced “kill” times. The lag in shifting is gone and the bike really cracks into gears.
  • 1:1 throttle response gives you a more lively experience riding the bike. Not only is OEM throttle lag reduced but power is also greater in tip-in throttle and light-to-light acceleration. A more precise throttle means better control in turns as well.
  • First gear RPM limiter raised from the OEM 13,000 RPM.
  • Refined per-cylinder tuning for better AFR (air/fuel ratio) over the entire RPM band. Optimized for track use to be more aggressive than Stage 1.
  • Maximum throttle monitor threshold raised from 83% to 100% in all modes. Higher torque threshold means more overall power and a more responsive feel.
  • Knock control system revised to filter out engine noise or vibration. Only true knock is detected by the sensor.

Any exhaust on the V4 platform, no matter the model, will have a horrible AFR with an exhaust system. The bike will spike lean and the power suffers largely. The factory mapping also includes other restrictions Stage 2 removes. The extended RPM limiter really helps at the track to reduce shifts and keep your bike in the powerband.

Q & A's

What does a BT Moto handheld tuner do?

The BT Moto handheld tuner stores multiple maps that you can change at any time. Unlike the mail-in ECU option, this means no downtime for your motorcycle while we do the flashing process. You can also go back to your stock mapping at any time you'd like and even read and clear engine faults. Additionally, some models will allow for DTC reading / clearing and maintenance light resets.

How does the BT Moto handheld tuning process work?
Easy, you purchase the handheld, we ship it to you. Use the BT Moto handheld tuner to copy your motorcycles stock file (motorcycle will still run fine after this) then email that to Motobull. BT Moto will then create a file from your stock mapping and we will email it back to you so can upload it to the handheld. Once uploaded you'll be able to flash your motorcycle with the BT Moto handheld tuner.

How do I put my motorcycle back to stock with the BT Moto handheld?
Go to "Work" -> "Writing" -> "Original" in the handheld and then it'll load the original factory stock file to your motorcycle.
